I never thought I’d live to see the day when entire counties in my home state of Maryland would willingly choose the comfort of chaos over the rule of law. Yet here we are.
According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, eight Maryland counties and Baltimore City have officially been classified as “sanctuary jurisdictions.” That’s not a badge of compassion — that’s a warning label. It means these places are actively defying federal immigration law, and in doing so, they’re jeopardizing the safety of the very citizens they were elected to protect.
Let’s be clear about what this is not: This is not about immigration as a whole. This is not an attack on legal immigrants — many of whom followed the rules, stood in line, filed their paperwork, and proudly took the oath to become Americans. This is about illegal immigration. This is about jurisdictions putting up bureaucratic speed bumps — and in some cases full-on barricades — to prevent federal agents from removing criminal aliens who have no legal right to remain in this country.
And now Maryland, the “Free State,” has become the “Flee State” — as in, criminals fleeing ICE because local officials would rather virtue signal than cooperate with the rule of law.
Let’s talk about the reality of “sanctuary.” These counties aren’t just offering a warm welcome and a blanket. They’re offering shelter to individuals who, in many cases, have already committed crimes beyond the illegal crossing of our border. Drug trafficking. Human smuggling. Gang violence. MS-13 members have been shielded under these policies, thanks to a growing number of local leaders more concerned with appearing “progressive” than being responsible.
Montgomery County, where I live, has become ground zero for this nonsense. A few years ago, it made headlines for several horrifying assaults committed by individuals who should’ve been deported — but weren’t, because the county refused to honor ICE detainers. And what was the County Council’s response? Not to reconsider their position. Not to reach out to federal authorities to coordinate better. No, they doubled down. They turned Montgomery County into a haven for people who view the law as optional.
Baltimore City is no better. The city is hemorrhaging residents, plagued by record homicides, and struggling to control a crime wave that would make 1980s New York look like Mayberry. And yet its leadership thinks the answer is to go to bat for people here illegally — many of whom, by DHS data, already have criminal records.
Let me ask a question the media won’t: Who benefits from these sanctuary policies?
It’s not the immigrant communities, who now live in fear because criminals can blend in and exploit the very neighborhoods that welcomed them. It’s not the police officers, who are being told to look the other way while the federal government pleads for help tracking down repeat offenders. It’s certainly not the law-abiding, tax-paying Marylanders who wake up every morning wondering if their children’s school is safe or if the man arrested three times down the street will be released — again.
No, the only people who benefit are politicians desperate to score points with activist groups, and the criminals who take advantage of the resulting chaos.
The Democratic leadership in Maryland pretends to be shocked by the DHS designation, as if their own policies didn’t bring it about. County executives and mayors are saying they “learned about it from the news.” Give me a break. They’ve spent years telegraphing their defiance. You don’t get called a sanctuary jurisdiction by accident. You earn that title by refusing detainers, denying access to jails, withholding information, and passing local ordinances that directly undermine federal enforcement.
And now they’ve been called out — and they’re scrambling to change the subject.
Some will try to spin this into an issue of states’ rights or local control. But immigration enforcement is not optional. The Constitution clearly defines immigration policy as a federal responsibility. You cannot run a country where some localities get to pick and choose which national laws they obey. That’s how you get anarchy.
And yet here we are. Maryland, once the birthplace of great American patriots, is now home to mayors and county executives who believe that cooperating with ICE is somehow immoral. These are the same people who will use every arm of government to enforce zoning laws or mask mandates — but federal immigration law? That, apparently, is where they draw the line.
If that sounds upside down, it’s because it is.
Sanctuary policies are not about safety. They’re not about compassion. They are about control — control over a narrative, control over public perception, and control over federal authority. They are political statements made by people who think the law only matters when it suits their agenda.
And the consequences? Ask Kate Steinle’s family. Ask the victims of MS-13 violence. Ask the parents in our own state who were blindsided when they discovered the man who assaulted their daughter had been arrested — and released — multiple times before ICE was even notified.
We have reached a dangerous tipping point. Sanctuary policies don’t just undermine federal law. They erode public trust. They send a message to citizens — and to immigrants who followed the legal path — that obedience is optional and lawlessness is tolerated.
It’s time for Marylanders to demand better. To demand that our leaders stop prioritizing the comfort of criminal aliens over the safety of our neighborhoods. To demand that our state respect the laws of this country and work with — not against — the agencies tasked with enforcing them.
This is not about fear. It’s about facts. It’s about the plain truth that no nation can survive, much less thrive, if it refuses to defend its borders and enforce its laws.
To the counties and cities on the DHS list: the time for denial is over. The spotlight is on you. You can either choose to reverse course and work with federal officials to ensure safety, or you can continue down this path of defiance and disorder.
But don’t be surprised when voters — many of whom are the very legal immigrants you claim to defend — say “enough.” Because the American people are tired of being told that their safety is secondary to political games. They’re tired of watching the rule of law twisted for soundbites and social media likes.
Maryland, we can do better. And we must. Before sanctuary becomes surrender. Before compassion turns into chaos. And before our state becomes a cautionary tale for the rest of the country.
