1. A breakdown in hiring and oversight
How is it possible that a school board or district failed to detect Roberts’ lack of legal status and removal order before hiring him? Some will argue that Roberts’ arrest is unfair or heavy-handed. But the fact is: a final removal order existed. That ruling is not a matter of whim — it is the result of legal process. In a nation founded on the rule of law, enforcement matters. If we permit high-profile exceptions, we invite chaos and selective enforcement.
3. Public safety must not be compromised
The presence of a firearm in this case cannot be ignored. Undocumented individuals are prohibited under federal law from possessing firearms. What Republicans Should Demand

State legislatures and school boards must immediately call for audits of how public institutions validate immigration status, check for removal orders, and enforce eligibility requirements. It’s plain that current systems can be gamed or bypassed.
Zero tolerance for law-breaking in public service
There should be no special exemptions for individuals in high-profile roles. If someone is found to be violating immigration law or other federal statutes, they must be held accountable — regardless of their achievements or public support.
Stronger coordination between agencies
Immigration authorities, local school boards, state Departments of Education, and law enforcement must coordinate more closely. Removal orders should be flagged with relevant state licensing bodies (for education, medical, legal, etc.) to prevent illegal employment in public service.
Public transparency and swift action
Voters deserve to know who is hired to lead their institutions and whether they meet all legal requirements. Districts must publish key credentials, background summaries, and proof of legal eligibility. When red flags emerge, swift removal is warranted.
