The battle for the soul of the Democratic Party is no longer theoretical it’s playing out right here in Montgomery County, Maryland. What we’re seeing is a modern civil war between two very different versions of the Democratic Party: the Clinton–Kennedy Democrats, who once believed in growth, pragmatism, and moderation, and the DSA Democrats, the self-described socialists who view capitalism as the enemy and government as the solution to nearly everything.
For years, the national party has been drifting left. The Clinton era’s “New Democrats,” the coalition that balanced budgets, signed welfare reform, and believed America should lead the free world, are now treated as relics of a bygone time. In their place stands a new faction, louder, angrier, and deeply ideological, embodied by figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Zohran Mamdani, and their growing network of local imitators.
And now, that ideological war has arrived in Montgomery County.
Marc Elrich’s Chosen Successor
Marc Elrich, the sitting County Executive and self-proclaimed “card-carrying member” of the Democratic Socialists of America, has thrown his support behind Councilmember Will Jawando, another DSA-aligned Democrat who proudly waves the same flag.
Elrich, who has spent years opposing economic growth in the name of “equity,” seems determined to ensure the county’s next leader carries on his experiment in soft socialism. His endorsement of Jawando isn’t just political i,t’s philosophical. It’s a passing of the torch from one ideologue to another.
If you liked Elrich’s anti-development crusades, higher taxes, and hostility toward the business community, you’ll love what’s next. Jawando is not just his ally h,e’s his heir.
The Get-Out-of-Jail-Free Card Politics
Jawando has made his name as a crusader for “criminal justice reform,” which in Montgomery County has often meant decriminalization first, accountability never. His legislative pattern reads like a Monopoly board for offenders, complete with a get-out-of-jail-free card.
The Jawando–Elrich vision of “public safety” is one where policing is restrained, prosecution is selective, and punishment is viewed as a systemic failure rather than a personal choice. It’s a philosophy rooted not in deterrence or rehabilitation, but in redistribution, the idea that criminal behavior is simply a symptom of inequality.
In their world, criminals are victims, and taxpayers are the problem.
The Clinton–Kennedy Democrats Are on Life Support
Contrast this with the old Democratic Party, the one of Bill Clinton, John F. Kennedy, and even the early Barack Obama. That party believed in expanding opportunity, not government dependency. It spoke the language of aspiration, not resentment. It is understood that a strong economy funds social progress, not the other way around.
In Montgomery County, those Democrats are an endangered species. The business-friendly moderates who once defined local politics have been sidelined by activists who see commerce as corruption and development as moral decay.
The coming primary will test whether any of that centrist DNA remains. Will voters reward Jawando’s DSA progressivism or will they signal fatigue with Elrich’s four years of stagnation and anti-growth policies?
The Stakes for Montgomery County
Under Elrich, Montgomery County’s reputation has shifted from “economic engine of Maryland” to “bureaucratic cautionary tale.”
- Businesses are leaving for friendlier jurisdictions.
- Housing remains unaffordable despite endless “affordable housing” initiatives.
- Taxes are high, yet schools and infrastructure show little return on investment.
Now, Elrich’s endorsement of Jawando promises more of the same just louder, costlier, and even further to the left.
If this is the Democratic Party’s “soul,” then it’s one torn between the reality of governance and the fantasy of ideology.
A Party at a Crossroads
The Democrats’ civil war is no longer between factions on paper it’s a war between results and rhetoric.
Do Democrats in Montgomery County want to follow the Clinton–Kennedy legacy of balanced budgets, moderate reform, and shared prosperity?
Or do they want to follow the DSA’s vision, a government that punishes success, excuses crime, and calls it progress?
Marc Elrich has made his choice. He’s betting that Montgomery County will embrace the socialist brand he helped normalize.
But voters, even Democrats, may be ready for something different.
Because no matter how many “get-out-of-jail-free” cards are handed out, the laws of economics and political gravity always come due.
The only option for JFK-Bill Clinton Democrats is to vote for the Republican before DSA Democrats like Will Jawando and Marc Elrich destroy this county any further.
2026 Vote Republican for a Change.
