In any functioning democracy, moral consistency should matter. Yet once again, Democrats-both in Virginia and nationally-are proving that their outrage is highly selective. When a Republican so much as utters a questionable tweet, the left mobilizes with torches and hashtags. But when one of their own, like Virginia Attorney General candidate Jay Jones, is caught making vile and violent remarks-fantasizing about the deaths of police officers and the children of political opponents-the Democratic Party suddenly discovers the virtue of silence.
Let’s be clear: Jay Jones is not just guilty of “poor judgment” or “bad optics.” His own text messages and reported private comments reveal a disturbing mindset that should disqualify anyone from holding public office, let alone serving as the chief law enforcement officer of the Commonwealth.
The Record Speaks for Itself
In a 2022 series of text messages, Jones reportedly told a colleague that if political opponents “die before me, I will go to their funerals to piss on their graves.”
He added that if given “three people, two bullets-Gilbert, Hitler, and Pol Pot-Gilbert gets both.” (Virginia Mercury, Oct. 5, 2025).
In another message, Jones crudely referenced House Speaker Todd Gilbert’s wife and children, writing that “only when people feel pain personally do they move on policy,” implying that personal tragedy-specifically, a child’s death-might be what it takes to change Republican minds. These are not words of passion; they are the thoughts of someone deeply unfit for public service.
And as if that weren’t enough, Delegate Carrie Coyner has now revealed that Jones told her in a 2020 phone call that “if a few police officers died, that might stop them from killing other people.” (Virginia Scope, Oct. 5, 2025). That’s not political rhetoric-it’s grotesque moral inversion.
When confronted, Jones denied making the statement, though he has admitted to and apologized for the 2022 texts, calling them “abhorrent” (Associated Press, Oct. 5, 2025). But that apology was damage control, not remorse. The Virginia Fraternal Order of Police immediately condemned him and called for his withdrawal from the race (Fox News, Oct. 6, 2025).
A Deafening Silence from Democrats
You would think that such comments-wishing death on police officers and children-would bring swift condemnation from both sides of the political aisle. Yet, Virginia Democrats have closed ranks around Jones. Not a single major figure in the party, including U.S. Representative Abigail Spanberger, who is running for governor, has denounced him. Governor Ralph Northam, who once faced his own moral scandal, has remained silent. National Democrats-from Kamala Harris to Chuck Schumer-have also kept quiet, perhaps fearing that any criticism would fracture their party before a crucial election.
This silence isn’t accidental. It’s strategic. Democrats know that Virginia is a bellwether state, and they fear that disavowing Jones might dampen enthusiasm among Black voters or the progressive base. But the price of this cowardice is credibility. The party that claims to “stand for decency” has decided that decency is negotiable-if the offender belongs to the right tribe.
A Pattern of Hypocrisy
This is not a one-off. It’s part of a pattern. Democrats talk endlessly about “threats to democracy,” “political violence,” and “rising extremism,” yet they excuse or ignore it when it comes from within their own ranks.
When a conservative makes an offhand remark, it becomes a week-long media scandal. But when a Democrat openly fantasizes about political enemies dying-nothing. No prime-time coverage. No outraged editorial in The Washington Post. Just silence.
We saw the same hypocrisy after the assassination attempt on President Trump earlier this year. Democrats who spent years demonizing Trump supporters were suddenly “horrified,” but within days, the same voices went back to calling Republicans fascists and extremists. The selective outrage is staggering.
As political commentator Mark Levin put it recently, “The left doesn’t oppose political violence-they just oppose it when it’s not on their side.”
The Stakes for Virginia
Jay Jones’s candidacy is more than a moral embarrassment-it’s a test of Virginia’s political integrity. The Attorney General’s job is to enforce the law impartially and protect public safety. How can voters trust someone who has openly spoken about police officers’ deaths as a policy motivator to defend those same officers in court?
The Fraternal Order of Police, veterans’ groups, and Republican leaders have demanded his withdrawal, yet Democrats refuse to act. Even as the New York Post, Politico, and AP have covered the scandal in detail, Democratic leadership continues to pretend that this is just a “Republican smear.” It’s not. It’s a moral failure, and their silence makes them complicit.
The Bottom Line
If Republicans had a candidate who texted about killing police or desecrating opponents’ graves, Democrats would be holding nightly vigils outside the Capitol. But when a Democrat does it, they shrug and move on. That’s not leadership-that’s rot.
Jay Jones has shown the world who he is: a man with poor judgment, violent instincts, and no moral compass. What’s worse is that the Democratic Party has shown who they are: a party that excuses the inexcusable when it’s politically convenient.
Virginia deserves better. The country deserves better. And voters deserve leaders who don’t just talk about justice-they live it.
