Well, it finally happened. Maryland Democrats staged their big “fact-finding” mission to the ICE holding facility in Baltimore — and you’d think, based on their rhetoric, they were on some Cold War-era humanitarian mission to check on the status of prisoners in the gulag. The only thing missing was Van Hollen in a fur hat, Elfreth with a clipboard, and Mfume taking notes on the temperature of the tea they were served.
Two weeks ago, this same delegation was denied entry to the facility. Why? Because, according to ICE, it’s classified as an office, not a detention center. Apparently, that was an unbearable injustice to our brave Democrat delegation — who, if you believe their own press releases, were risking life and limb to “see the truth.”
So, they finally got in. And the big reveal? Mattresses. Cold walls. The horror.
Look, I get it — nobody’s trying to make ICE holding areas look like a suite at the Four Seasons. These aren’t exactly choir boys we’re talking about here. To quote our great President, “… these are very bad people.” That’s not me being dramatic — that’s just fact. Many of these detainees have rap sheets longer than a CVS receipt. Yet the Democrats treat them like victims of political persecution in the old Soviet Union.
Funny thing, though — I haven’t seen this same group of lawmakers dropping everything to meet with the family of that Harford County mom who was murdered by an illegal alien. You know, the other side of the immigration story? The one the media buries under “heartwarming” coverage of activists handing out “Know Your Rights” pamphlets? Yeah, that story. That’s the part where we find out the guy shouldn’t have even been in this country. But instead of standing with her family, Democrats are more concerned about whether a detainee in Baltimore has access to a fluffy pillow.
Van Hollen, Elfreth, and Mfume claim they left the facility with “more questions than answers.” They weren’t allowed to speak with detainees — which is probably a blessing, considering how quickly they’d be tweeting out sob stories about how Jorge from El Salvador just wants to “make a better life” and somehow accidentally crossed the border with a stolen car, fentanyl, and a fake passport.
Mfume says he saw a holding area “with dozens of mattresses” but “little else by way of furnishings.” Well… yeah. It’s a detention facility, not a Pottery Barn showroom. You don’t get an accent wall, a rug, and throw pillows when you’ve been arrested for violating federal immigration law.
Van Hollen is outraged because the facility was “designed for 12 hours” but averages 72. Well, welcome to the reality of a broken immigration system your party refuses to fix, Senator. Maybe if Democrats weren’t trying to dismantle ICE at every turn, there’d be enough resources to move people through faster.
Then, of course, comes the moral outrage: “84% of those in detention pose no public threat.” Uh-huh. And what’s your definition of “public threat,” Senator? Because mine includes illegal re-entry, drug trafficking, and identity theft. But sure, let’s pretend we’re only locking up sweet grandmas who overstayed a tourist visa.
Elfreth warns detainees could be shipped off “anywhere in this country… without access to an attorney, their medication, contact with a family member.” Yeah, that’s called being processed. It’s not a secret black-site rendition. If they’re in ICE custody, they’ve already broken the law by being here illegally. And as for the medication part — this is the same crowd that thinks American citizens should wait months for a doctor’s appointment because the system is overrun, but they expect instant concierge care for people who aren’t even supposed to be here.
Mfume got especially huffy when ICE wouldn’t tell him the nationalities of detainees. He called it “inefficient.” Inefficient is letting the same people cross the border three or four times while politicians in Annapolis and D.C. keep debating whether “illegal alien” is an offensive term. Inefficient is ignoring actual victims while staging PR tours to facilities you want to shut down.
Here’s the bottom line: this wasn’t an oversight mission. It was a photo op without the photos. A way for Maryland Democrats to paint ICE as the bad guys and themselves as the noble defenders of “human rights” — as long as those rights belong to people here illegally.
Meanwhile, the real victims — like that Harford County mom — barely get a mention. Her story doesn’t fit the narrative. It doesn’t look good in a press release. And it sure doesn’t help the Democrats’ ongoing campaign to turn Maryland into the East Coast’s largest sanctuary state.
So, spare me the breathless “we left with more questions than answers” routine. If you want answers, here’s one: these individuals are being detained because they broke the law. Period. And until the Democrats can admit that — without an asterisk, without the crocodile tears, without pretending ICE is running a Siberian labor camp — the rest of us will see these “inspections” for what they are: staged outrage for political gain.
If Van Hollen, Elfreth, and Mfume want to fight for someone, maybe they should start with the people they were actually elected to represent — the citizens of Maryland who deserve safe communities, secure borders, and lawmakers who know the difference between compassion and coddling.
