Fifteen days into the Schumer Shutdown, the reason Washington is paralyzed isn’t a mystery. It’s not over defense spending, or border security, or even Ukraine aid. The fight is over something most Americans don’t even realize still exists-a COVID-era welfare expansion Democrats refuse to let die.
That “something” is the so-called “enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies.” These were temporary handouts created during the pandemic under Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan Act of 2021-a “relief” bill that flooded the economy with trillions in new spending, much of which had nothing to do with COVID.
At the time, Democrats argued people were losing jobs, businesses were closing, and families needed extra help buying health insurance. Fair enough-America was facing the worst economic shock in a century. But what was sold as temporary COVID relief has now turned into another permanent entitlement that Democrats will shut down the government to protect.
From Temporary Aid to Permanent Dependency
Here’s the truth: the “enhanced subsidies” were designed to prop up Obamacare’s failing exchanges by throwing more taxpayer money at them. Before the pandemic, Obamacare’s premium tax credits helped low- and moderate-income families pay for insurance if their income was between 100% and 400% of the poverty line.
But under the 2021 COVID relief package, Democrats blew the lid off those limits. They made everyone eligible, no matter how much money they made, by capping the share of income a household pays for insurance at 8.5%. A family making over $250,000 a year could now get federal subsidies meant for the poor.
They also increased the size of the subsidies for everyone, meaning Washington was paying a bigger share of everyone’s health insurance bill. They even created “zero-premium” plans-where the government picks up the entire tab.
That was supposed to last two years-just long enough for the COVID crisis. But Democrats couldn’t resist. In 2022, they slipped another extension into the Inflation Reduction Act, which-ironically-inflated federal spending even more. Those pandemic-era subsidies are now set to expire at the end of 2025, and Democrats are desperate to extend them again, this time through the Continuing Resolution (CR) to reopen government.
In other words, Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats are holding the government hostage to keep a pandemic-era welfare program alive.
The Pandemic Is Over-So Why Are We Still Paying for It?
Even Joe Biden himself declared the pandemic over in 2022. Schools are open, the economy is humming, and unemployment is near record lows. But Washington Democrats act like we’re still in lockdown.
They’re fighting to preserve a temporary emergency measure that’s now costing taxpayers hundreds of billions. According to the Congressional Budget Office, making these expanded subsidies permanent would cost over $300 billion in the next decade.
That’s not relief-that’s reckless.
This is how Washington’s spending addiction works: Democrats use a crisis to create “temporary” programs, then refuse to end them once the crisis passes. COVID may be gone, but the spending never ends.
Republicans are absolutely right to draw the line. We can’t keep borrowing money to fund programs designed for an emergency that ended three years ago. America is $35 trillion in debt. The interest alone on that debt now rivals our entire defense budget.
Yet Senate Democrats are willing to keep federal workers furloughed and shut down vital services until Republicans agree to extend subsidies that didn’t exist before COVID.
A Trojan Horse for Socialized Medicine
Let’s be honest-this fight isn’t about “helping working families.” It’s about keeping the federal government in control of health care.
By massively expanding subsidies, Democrats have made millions of Americans dependent on Washington for insurance. They know that once people get used to free or cheap government-funded coverage, it becomes politically impossible to roll it back.
It’s the oldest liberal trick in the book: create dependency, then call it compassion.
This is the slow creep toward single-payer health care-one subsidy expansion at a time. And Republicans know it.
That’s why conservatives in Congress are standing firm. They’re saying no to more COVID-era welfare and yes to fiscal sanity. They’re saying it’s time to return power to individuals and states, not bureaucrats and federal agencies.
What Ending the Handouts Really Means
Of course, Democrats and their media allies are already sounding the alarm-warning that “millions could lose coverage” if these subsidies expire. What they don’t say is that most of those people are already middle- or upper-income Americans who don’t need government help in the first place.
Before the pandemic, Americans at those income levels paid their own way, just as millions still do today through employer-based plans. The enhanced subsidies didn’t solve a crisis-they just created a new class of taxpayer-funded dependents.
Repealing them wouldn’t strip anyone of coverage-it would simply end the artificial discounts Washington used to hide the true cost of Obamacare.
If Democrats want to keep funding these subsidies, they should do it through a separate vote-not by holding the government hostage. The CR should be clean, limited, and focused on reopening government-not extending a pandemic-era spending spree.
Time to End the COVID Welfare State
America is three years past COVID, but Democrats can’t let it go. They want the pandemic to live forever-at least on the federal budget ledger.
It’s time for Republicans to say “enough.” The pandemic is over. The shutdown can end today-if Democrats stop demanding permanent extensions of temporary welfare.
We don’t need another trillion-dollar Washington giveaway. We need a government that knows when to stop spending.
The MAGA movement stands for fiscal sanity, American strength, and self-reliance. Democrats stand for endless dependency and bureaucratic control.
The choice couldn’t be clearer: end the Schumer Shutdown, end the COVID handouts, and put America back to work.
