Marylanders are once again witnessing history repeat itself. Governor Wes Moore, who entered office on a wave of hope and high expectations, is proving to be an all-too-familiar story of Democratic fiscal mismanagement. Much like his predecessor from the early 2000s, Martin O’Malley, Moore is squandering the surplus left to him by a fiscally responsible Republican governor. This time, Governor Larry Hogan left Maryland’s coffers in a strong position—balanced budgets, surplus funds, and an economic roadmap to maintain stability without raising taxes.
In less than two years, Moore’s administration has squandered that surplus. With the state budget teetering on the edge, the Democratic-controlled legislature is preparing the only solution they ever seem to offer: massive tax hikes. Marylanders should brace themselves for the avalanche of new taxes and fees, from income and sales taxes to higher fees and property taxes. The worst part? These new burdens won’t solve the underlying problems of crime, failing schools, and crumbling infrastructure. Instead, they’ll line the pockets of pet projects and political allies, leaving working families and small businesses to shoulder the load.
This fiscal recklessness isn’t an isolated incident—it’s a pattern. We saw it during the O’Malley years when the surplus left by Governor Bob Ehrlich vanished in a haze of spending and overreach. O’Malley’s legacy left Maryland in worse shape, driving families and businesses out of the state. Moore is following the same playbook, with the same disastrous consequences.
Maryland’s Crime Crisis: A Failure of Leadership
Crime remains a glaring failure of Democratic leadership in Maryland. Baltimore continues to rank among the most dangerous cities in America, with violent crime and homicides dominating headlines. Yet Moore’s administration seems more focused on social experiments than on making streets safe for families and businesses.
Instead of empowering law enforcement, the administration’s policies have demoralized police departments, leading to higher attrition rates and fewer police officers. Meanwhile, crime is spilling into suburban areas like Montgomery County, once considered safe havens. If Marylanders feel unsafe in their neighborhoods, how can the state expect to attract new residents or businesses?
Republicans must hammer home the message that they stand for law and order, supporting police and implementing stricter penalties for violent criminals. Public safety isn’t a partisan issue—it’s a fundamental right.
Education in Maryland: High Spending, Low Results
Maryland’s schools are a national embarrassment. Despite some of the highest per-student spending in the country, our students’ test scores are dismal. Baltimore City schools, in particular, have seen catastrophic failure, with reports of entire grade levels unable to perform basic reading and math skills. Moore’s administration has done little to address this crisis, instead throwing more money into a broken system.
Republicans need to make education reform a cornerstone of their message. School choice, charter schools, and accountability for teachers and administrators must be central to any serious attempt to fix Maryland’s failing education system. Parents, not bureaucrats, should be in control of their children’s education.
Taxes: The Straw That Breaks the Camel’s Back
Marylanders already live in one of the most taxed states in the country. With the surplus gone, the Democrats’ solution is predictably tone-deaf: raise taxes even higher. What they fail to understand—or willfully ignore—is that Marylanders are voting with their feet. Families and businesses are leaving for states like Florida, Texas, and Virginia, where the tax burden is lower, the cost of living is more affordable, and the quality of life is higher.
The Moore administration’s tax hikes won’t just hurt working families—they’ll crush small businesses, the backbone of Maryland’s economy. Higher taxes mean fewer jobs, slower economic growth, and less investment in local communities. The Republican Party must be the voice for those who cannot bear another penny in taxes. It’s time to say enough is enough.
2026: A Time for Accountability
As the 2026 elections approach, Marylanders must remember the failures of Wes Moore and the Democratic supermajority in Annapolis. It’s not enough to complain about the problems; we must take action at the ballot box. Republicans must run a unified, disciplined campaign focused on three critical issues: crime, taxes, and failing schools.
- Crime: Every Republican candidate must prioritize public safety and advocate for common-sense policies that restore order and protect law-abiding citizens.
- Taxes: The GOP must remind voters of the Hogan administration’s fiscal responsibility and contrast it with the Moore administration’s recklessness.
- Education: Republicans must champion school choice, transparency, and accountability in education to ensure every child in Maryland has a chance to succeed.
A Call to Action
Maryland doesn’t have to remain stuck in this cycle of Democratic mismanagement. There is an alternative, and that alternative is Republican leadership that prioritizes fiscal responsibility, public safety, and quality education. If Republicans can unite around a clear, concise message, they have a real chance to win in 2026 and begin the hard work of repairing the damage.
It’s time to toss out the bums who have failed us for too long. Maryland deserves better—let’s fight to make it happen.
