South Asian Hindu voters, you’ve been played. The same man who smiled through Diwali events, spoke about “unity,” and promised to “represent all New Yorkers,” has now turned around and branded the leader of your ancestral homeland, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a “war criminal.”
Yes, New York’s new mayor, Zohran Mamdani, said it publicly during a May 2025 town hall and then doubled down after the election. Mamdani, the son of the Ugandan-born academic Mahmood Mamdani, accused Modi of “helping to orchestrate a mass slaughter of Muslims in Gujarat” in 2002. To most Americans, that may sound like a distant dispute. But for millions of Hindu Americans and for anyone who cares about truth it should sound like an insult.
The Facts Behind the Fury
The 2002 Gujarat riots were tragic over a thousand people were killed in horrific sectarian violence. But let’s remember: India’s courts cleared Modi of wrongdoing more than a decade ago. Even the Supreme Court of India closed the investigation in 2012. Yet Mamdani, an American politician running for mayor of New York, decided to play international prosecutor from a Brooklyn podium.
And it’s not just India he’s after. Mamdani has been openly hostile to Israel as well, calling for an end to U.S. military aid and aligning with groups that label Israel an “apartheid state.” Think about that. Modi and Netanyahu are allies in the fight against radical Islam and terrorism, and this man has declared ideological war on both of them.
So here’s the question: how did Hindu New Yorkers, many of whom celebrate the India–Israel alliance, end up voting for a candidate who seems to despise both countries?
A Dangerous Brand of Politics
Let’s be honest: Mamdani is not an “Indian” candidate in the way the media painted him. He may be of Indian descent, but he doesn’t speak for the Indian community, certainly not the millions of Hindus who have found success, peace, and freedom here in America.
Instead, he speaks for the “post-colonial socialist” crowd that views every successful democracy whether it’s India, Israel, or the United States, as an oppressor. His worldview divides people into victims and villains, colonized and colonizers, and oppressed and oppressors. It’s the same toxic thinking that has poisoned college campuses and now infiltrated city hall.
And for what? Votes. Identity politics. A progressive résumé stamped with fashionable outrage. While working-class New Yorkers struggle to pay rent, Mamdani rails against world leaders halfway across the globe.
How Did Hindu Voters Fall for This?
The irony is painful. Many Hindu Americans, including doctors, engineers, and small business owners, supported Mamdani, thinking he represented the next generation of South Asian success. They saw “representation.” What they got was rejection of their faith, their culture, and their homeland’s elected leader.
It’s as if the same voters who celebrate Diwali at Times Square forgot to ask one simple question before voting: Does this candidate respect what I believe?
Because Mamdani doesn’t. He has shown contempt not only for India’s government but for the millions of Hindus who see Modi as a symbol of Indian pride and global standing. He has even suggested that supporting Israel a fellow democracy and close Indian ally is somehow immoral.
The Bigger Picture
Let’s zoom out. This isn’t just about India or Israel. It’s about the kind of politics that demonizes strength, success, and self-defense. The same ideology that calls Modi a “war criminal” will call police officers “fascists,” taxpayers “exploiters,” and parents “bigots.” It’s the politics of perpetual guilt, and it never ends.
Mamdani’s victory wasn’t a triumph for South Asians. It was a win for the far-left global movement that sees Western civilization and anyone allied with it as the enemy. Hindus, Israelis, conservatives, and even moderate Democrats are all next in line.
Time to Wake Up
For Indian-American Hindus who voted for Mamdani, it’s time for a reckoning. You voted for a man who disrespects your faith, your homeland, and your allies. You handed power to someone who mocks the very values of self-reliance, education, hard work, and faith that define your community.
Don’t say you weren’t warned.
As India and Israel stand shoulder-to-shoulder against radical Islam, America just handed one of its biggest cities to a man who sympathizes with the other side. That’s not progress it’s betrayal wrapped in diversity branding.
And the next time someone like Zohran Mamdani tells you he’s “fighting for justice,” remember this: justice isn’t about tearing down democracies or insulting nations that stand for freedom. It’s about protecting them.
