This Wednesday, Direct Line is honored to welcome Governor Jim Gilmore, a distinguished leader with a storied career in public service and a rich history of contributions to the Commonwealth of Virginia. Born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, Governor Gilmore embarked on a path of service and leadership early in his life. After earning his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia in 1971, he served as a U.S. Army counterintelligence agent in West Germany for three years before returning to his alma mater to earn his law degree in 1977.

Governor Gilmore dedicated a decade to community service and private legal practice before being elected Commonwealth’s Attorney for Henrico County in 1987 and again in 1991. His public service trajectory continued as he was elected Virginia Attorney General in 1993 and Governor in 1997. During his tenure as Governor, he made significant strides in improving education, implementing rigorous academic standards, and ensuring accountability in schools. He also championed tax relief, enacting the largest tax cut in Virginia’s history by virtually eliminating the personal property tax on cars and trucks.

Governor Gilmore’s accomplishments extend to technology, where he pioneered the nation’s first secretariat in technology and established a statewide technology commission. His visionary leadership in technology and governance has left a lasting impact.
