The Biden Administration’s irresponsibly lax border policies have escalated what was already a pivotal issue into an all-out crisis, as our southern border leaks like a sieve. Amidst this backdrop, economic hardship, job displacement, and rising crime waves wrought by illegal immigrants plague our communities. Yet, amid these turbulent times, a glimmer of decisive action shines through the political fog—House Republicans are rallying to a crucial cause: safeguarding our elections from non-citizen interference.
Remember 2019? Under Trump’s watch, a righteous attempt to include a citizenship question on the census was thwarted by a Supreme Court leaning left. Fast forward to today, and it’s high time for round two. Representative Chuck Edwards (R-NC) steps into the fray with the Equal Representation Act (H.R. 7109), mandating that future censuses ask respondents about their citizenship status—no more counting non-citizens for congressional seats. This is about drawing districts for American citizens, who actually have skin in the game when it comes to federal elections.
This Wednesday, despite the liberal outcry, the Equal Representation Act narrowly passed the House. This isn’t just about numbers; it’s about principle. Allowing illegal immigrants a hand in shaping our legislature is a disgrace and a path to ruin.
And then there’s Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), who’s been relentless in holding the Biden administration’s feet to the fire for their border blunders. This month, he demanded a comprehensive report from Homeland Security on the real numbers of illegal immigrants who have dodged border security and are draining public resources. While he awaits a response, Roy, alongside Senator Mike Lee (R-UT), is pushing the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility “SAVE” Act (H.R. 8281) to ensure that only American citizens can vote. This isn’t just policy—it’s protection.
At a recent press conference, a battle cry for citizen-only voting was sounded, unveiling the Only Citizens Vote Coalition. This alliance of over 80 organizations aims to fortify our election laws against any loopholes that might allow noncitizen voting, a threat that looms at state and local levels too. Just last year, Washington, D.C., attempted to permit noncitizens to vote in local elections, a move now being challenged by Senator Roger Marshall (R-KS) with the Demanding Citizenship in DC Elections Act.
It’s high time Congress took a firm, unyielding stand against the infiltration of our electoral system by those who have not entered this country by legal means. We commend the efforts of Representatives like Edwards and the bold legislative strides being taken to ensure that our electoral sanctity is preserved. The storm of illegal immigration must be met with unapologetic resolve, and our elections safeguarded for American citizens alone. We are witnessing a pivotal moment where actions must speak louder than words—our nation’s future depends on it.
