The Democratic Party, once known for its strong ties to Jewish communities and solid support for Israel, has undergone a significant ideological shift in recent years. The Squad and Their Anti-Semitic Rhetoric

They have repeatedly made headlines for their controversial and, at times, blatantly anti-Semitic remarks.
Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) has been a lightning rod for criticism due to her frequent incendiary statements about Israel and the Jewish community. One of her most infamous comments came in 2019 when she tweeted that American support for Israel is “all about the Benjamins,” implying that pro-Israel advocates, including AIPAC, buy political support through financial influence. This comment echoed the age-old anti-Semitic trope of Jewish control over global finances. Despite facing condemnation from both parties, Omar doubled down, later suggesting that her criticisms were valid and not rooted in bigotry.
Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), another prominent Squad member, has also been vocal in her anti-Israel rhetoric. Tlaib has consistently used her platform to call for the dismantling of Israel as a Jewish state, referring to it as an “apartheid regime.” She has also endorsed the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement, which seeks to economically and politically isolate Israel. There is, however, some hope that the pendulum may swing back toward moderation. In recent Democratic primaries, two prominent Squad members faced significant challenges. In Ohio, Rep. Shontel Brown, a pro-Israel Democrat, defeated former state senator Nina Turner, a vocal critic of Israel. Brown’s victory signaled that pro-Israel sentiment still holds weight among Democratic voters, at least in some districts.
Similarly, Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) defeated challenger Suraj Patel, who ran a campaign critical of U.S.-Israel relations. Maloney, a strong advocate for Israel, was able to fend off a well-funded challenge from the left, demonstrating that the radical anti-Israel faction within the party is not invincible. These defeats underscore a growing tension within the Democratic Party between the far-left progressives and the more moderate, pro-Israel wing of the party.
Kamala Harris’ Snub of Benjamin Netanyahu
Vice President Kamala Harris has also come under scrutiny for her actions—or lack thereof—when it comes to supporting Israel. During Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visits to the U.S., Harris conspicuously avoided meeting with him. In contrast to previous administrations, which treated Netanyahu as a close ally and friend of the U.S., Harris’ behavior has been interpreted by many as a diplomatic snub, signaling a shift in U.S.-Israel relations.
Harris’ cold shoulder towards Netanyahu is emblematic of a larger trend within the Democratic Party, where support for Israel is no longer a given. While President Biden has attempted to maintain a balanced approach, his vice president and other leading Democrats have adopted a more critical stance toward Israel, particularly in the context of the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The Danger of a Harris Presidency
As we approach the 2024 election, it is critical to examine what a Kamala Harris presidency would mean for U.S.-Israel relations and the broader fight against terrorism in the Middle East. Harris’ unwillingness to stand by Israel during critical moments, coupled with her proximity to the Squad, raises serious concerns about the future of U.S. support for Israel under her leadership.
Her vice presidency has already seen growing tolerance for anti-Israel rhetoric within the Democratic Party, and there is every reason to believe this trend would continue if she were to ascend to the presidency. The Squad and their supporters have called for a dramatic reduction in U.S. military aid to Israel, a cornerstone of the U.S.-Israel relationship. Harris has not publicly distanced herself from these voices, leaving the possibility that she may adopt similar policies if elected president.
Moreover, by failing to take a strong stance against terrorist organizations like Hamas and Hezbollah, Harris risks emboldening these groups, which pose a direct threat not only to Israel but also to regional stability in the Middle East. Hamas, designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S. government, continues to launch rocket attacks against Israeli civilians, yet prominent Democrats, including members of the Squad, refuse to condemn these acts of violence unequivocally.

The Democratic Party’s embrace of anti-Israel and, in some cases, anti-Semitic rhetoric is a troubling development that should not be ignored.
