As Hurricane Milton barrels toward Florida, with North Carolina still reeling from the devastation of Hurricane Helene, the stark contrast between how President George W. Bush was treated during Hurricane Katrina and how President Biden and Vice President Harris are being handled today by the media couldn’t be more glaring. This is more than just a tale of two hurricanes—this is a tale of blatant media bias and the catastrophic failure of leadership by the Biden-Harris administration.
In 2005, when Hurricane Katrina decimated New Orleans, the media unleashed a relentless barrage of attacks on President Bush. The narrative was swift and brutal: Bush was portrayed as incompetent, detached, and indifferent to the suffering of the predominantly Black population in New Orleans. Nightly news broadcasts fixated on his administration’s response, framing it as a failure of epic proportions. Bush’s every move was scrutinized, and the coverage wasn’t just about the hurricane—it was about tearing down the president.
The facts, however, told a more complex story. Despite the media’s constant attacks, Bush was engaged from the moment Katrina made landfall. He monitored the storm’s path, worked closely with FEMA, and coordinated with state and local officials to deliver federal aid. While the media was intent on making him the villain, Bush stayed focused on leading the nation through one of the most devastating natural disasters in American history. He wasn’t out fundraising, nor was he making appearances on late-night comedy shows. His attention was where it needed to be—on the American people.
Now, let’s fast forward to 2024. Hurricane Helene has left parts of North Carolina in ruins, and Hurricane Milton is set to devastate Florida. But where are Biden and Harris? More importantly, where’s the media? The answer: Biden is out fundraising, and Harris is laughing it up on late-night television. Meanwhile, FEMA is stretched to the breaking point, with reports that it’s running out of money. The administration has been conspicuously absent from the disaster zone, and there is no sense of urgency from the White House.
But the media? They’re silent. The same outlets that savaged Bush for Katrina are barely mentioning Biden’s absence in the face of these disasters. Why? Because holding Biden and Harris accountable would force the media to confront the truth—they’ve spent years propping up this administration, and now, as it crumbles under the weight of its own incompetence, they can’t afford to admit they were wrong.
The hypocrisy is staggering. Under Bush, the media framed Katrina as a failure of leadership. But under Biden, the devastation in North Carolina is treated as just another news story. Where are the breathless headlines declaring, “Biden’s Helene Failure” or “Biden Abandons North Carolina”? Why isn’t Harris being pilloried for prioritizing entertainment over disaster relief? The answer is simple: the media’s double standard is in full effect.
Let’s not forget the stark difference in responses. After Katrina, Bush didn’t take time off for political fundraising or appearances on television. He didn’t abandon the victims of the hurricane to score political points. He was criticized for doing a flyover of New Orleans rather than immediately landing—but at least he was paying attention. In contrast, Biden seems more interested in maintaining his fundraising schedule than leading the country through this disaster. The American people have seen more of Harris on talk shows than they’ve seen of her addressing the destruction left behind by Helene.
As if that weren’t bad enough, FEMA’s budget is depleted, and instead of prioritizing recovery efforts for Americans, Biden’s administration has focused on pushing more funds toward supporting illegal immigrants. While North Carolinians struggle to rebuild their homes and lives, the Biden administration is focused elsewhere—on policies that have nothing to do with disaster relief. And where’s the media? Nowhere to be found.
If Bush had done what Biden is doing right now—ignoring a major hurricane while fundraising and appearing on TV—the calls for his impeachment would have been deafening. The media would have painted him as unfit for office, detached from reality, and callously indifferent to the suffering of American citizens. But for Biden and Harris? They get a free pass.
In the aftermath of Katrina, the media stoked racial tensions and used the tragedy to score political points. They conveniently ignored the fact that state and local leaders, particularly New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin and Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco, failed their citizens in crucial ways. FEMA’s response, while imperfect, was blamed entirely on Bush, despite the reality that disaster recovery is a coordinated effort between federal, state, and local governments. But when it comes to Helene and Milton, no such scrutiny has been applied to Biden and Harris. The media isn’t interested in holding them accountable—it’s interested in protecting them from blame.
The people of North Carolina and Florida deserve better. They deserve leaders who prioritize their safety and recovery over political fundraising and vanity appearances. They deserve a president and vice president who, at the very least, pretend to care. But more than anything, they deserve a media that tells the truth, even when it’s inconvenient for the political narrative they’ve spent years crafting.
It’s clear that Biden and Harris are not up to the task. Their response to Hurricane Helene has been lackluster at best, and their absence as Hurricane Milton approaches is an abdication of leadership. But what’s worse is that the media refuses to hold them accountable. If Bush’s response to Katrina was a “failure,” then Biden and Harris’s response to Helene and Milton is a catastrophe. But you wouldn’t know that from watching the evening news.
In 2005, Bush was unfairly vilified by a media more interested in sensationalism than facts. Today, Biden and Harris are being shielded from criticism by the same outlets that once declared themselves the watchdogs of democracy. The hypocrisy is as dangerous as it is infuriating.
The American people deserve the truth. They deserve leadership in times of crisis. And they deserve to know why their president and vice president are more interested in their own political careers than in the well-being of those affected by these devastating storms.
Bush was crucified for Katrina. Biden and Harris are being given a free pass for Helene and Milton. This is the tale of two hurricanes, but more importantly, it’s the tale of a media and an administration that have utterly failed the American people.
